For some students attending Page Academy, getting a driver’s license can be an uphill battle. Obstacles such as lack of financial means, transportation, proper documentation, and support stand in the way between them and this high school milestone.
Being a legal driver is important. It helps students get to school each day and can allow them to find jobs.
“Having educated drivers who are licensed makes it a safer environment for everyone,” says Principal Jay Rodert. “A lot of kids here need it to drive to school or work.”
One volunteer saw the need, and began helping students gather documentation to enroll in Oklahoma Driving School.
“She paid for part of it out of her own pocket,” says Rodert. “She teaches drivers ed and would help students receive a license when they finished the program.”
However, there were many other students who needed this opportunity. That’s why teachers at Page Academy applied for a grant through the Sand Springs Education Foundation.
When they were awarded the grant in November, 2025, the school immediately got to work.
As soon as students are old enough to begin working toward the learning permit, they start studying. Once the student is ready, they are taken to do the test. After receiving the learner’s permit, students have the opportunity to enroll in driver’s education classes and are taken for driving lessons.
“The grant allowed us to open the program up to more students,” says Rodert. “Some students even commuted to school via city bus. This gives them the option for how to get to school and work.”
But, having a license isn’t just about checking off a milestone. This is providing kids with more options.
“It’s improved their attendance because these students no longer rely on parents or a city bus to get them to school,” says Rodert. “Improved attendance means improved grades.”
By removing the obstacles to the driver’s seat, Page Academy is helping students drive toward a brighter future.
