Montie R. Box

Sand Springs Education Foundation - Montie Box - Founder

Montie Rolen Box is a testament to how a life of genuine kindness, dedication, and vision can shape a community. He was raised with the values of compassion and hard work from a young age, and carried these principles throughout his storied life.

Montie was renowned for his ability to forge connections with people, embodying the spirit of “never meeting a stranger.” His career in real estate, spanning Sand Springs and the greater Tulsa area, was marked by a combination of charisma, intelligence, and perseverance. Nationally recognized for his achievements, he was affectionately known locally as “Mr. Sand Springs” for his unwavering commitment to his hometown. In honor of his contributions, the city of Sand Springs designated downtown as the Box District.

At just two years old, Montie’s father began working for the Sand Springs Home as a farm manager. Growing up on the farm, Montie gained early lessons in agriculture and community service, delivering milk to the Sand Springs Widows’ Colony and Children’s Home before school each day.

Montie graduated from Sand Springs High School in 1947, forging lasting friendships. He furthered his education at Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) and remained a devoted alumnus throughout his life. Following college, Montie served in the Korean conflict as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was a dedicated member of the American Legion for over 70 years.

After his military service, Montie joined his father-in-law Ray Brown in the insurance and real estate business. Montie bought out the Ray Brown Agency, expanding it and solidifying his commitment to Sand Springs by constructing a new office in the town’s heart. His company, Montie Box Co., flourished for 68 years, and he was instrumental in the development of residential, commercial, and industrial properties in the region.

Montie’s philanthropic and civic engagement were as impressive as his business achievements. He held leadership roles with numerous organizations, including the Salvation Army, Sand Springs Lions Club, and the Tulsa Boys Home, among others. His dedication to community service earned him recognition as a Sandite Hall of Fame inductee and Hometown Hero.

In the real estate realm, Montie’s influence extended far beyond Sand Springs. He served in various capacities with the Greater Tulsa Association of Realtors, the Oklahoma Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors, where he received the Distinguished Service Award.

A proud founder of the Sand Springs Education Foundation in 1989, Montie understood the value of public education. The foundation, which started with a traditional “Box supper,” has since distributed over $1 million in grants to teachers.

Montie’s involvement in youth sports, particularly wrestling, and his active role in his local church underscored his commitment to nurturing the next generation and strengthening his faith. He enjoyed a rich personal life with his wife Betty, his children Gayle, Jimmy, and Dana, and his step-son Danny Baker. His love for family extended to his hobbies, including farming, aviation, and golf, where he boasted six holes-in-one and played on some of the world’s most prestigious courses.

Montie Box lived each day with a full heart, embraced life’s opportunities, and cherished his roots in Sand Springs. He left an indelible mark on his community and beyond, always proud to introduce himself as “Montie Box, Sand Springs, Oklahoma,” reflecting his deep love for his hometown.
