Mike Burdge’s journey from the combat zones of Vietnam to the corridors of local government and the track fields of high school cross country exemplifies dedication and service. His multifaceted career, spanning military service, local politics, and coaching, has left an indelible mark on Sand Springs and beyond.
Mike Burdge, a 1969 graduate of Charles Page High School, began his career with Southwest Porcelain Steel after briefly attending Tulsa Community College and Tulsa Vo-Tech. His path took a pivotal turn in 1970 when he was drafted and served in Vietnam as a radio operator and operations specialist in the Central Highlands and at the DMZ’s Quan Tri Combat Compound. For his meritorious service, Mike earned the Army Commendation Medal and was honorably discharged in 1971.
Upon returning to Sand Springs, Mike embarked on a 36-year career in the steel industry, advancing from laborer to educator. His commitment to public service began in 1996, leading to an impressive 18-year tenure on the Sand Springs City Council, including eight years as Mayor and six as Vice Mayor. His leadership has been instrumental in numerous initiatives, including the expansion of Wal-Mart and Webco through the TIF committee, Vision 2025, and founding the Park Friends organization.
Mike’s passion for running is equally notable. With 27 years of coaching high school cross country, he has earned the 2013 Tulsa World Cross Country Coach of the Year title and has mentored several state champions. He shares his life with his wife Cathy and their three grown children, and continues to inspire both in politics and sports.
