Dr. Richard Neal’s remarkable life was defined by his passion for education, his dedication to students, and his extraordinary academic achievements. His legacy continues to inspire those who knew him and countless others who benefit from his contributions to mathematics and education.
Richard Neal, son of John and Francis Neal, began his academic journey in the Sand Springs Public Schools, culminating in his graduation in 1967. His early promise was evident when he started an accelerated math program in junior high, taking Algebra in the 8th grade. He also found joy in vocal music and drama, and added sports to his repertoire, starting with baseball at age 12.
At Charles Page High School, Richard excelled in math, vocal music, wrestling, and football. He was a key player on the undefeated Sandite Football Team of 1966-1967, earning the Outstanding Defensive Player award. His wrestling accolades included being named Tulsa World Co-wrestler of the Week, receiving the Scholar-Athlete Award of 1967, and winning regional and state AAU Freestyle Tournaments. These accomplishments earned him both a wrestling scholarship and a vocal music scholarship to the University of Oklahoma.
Richard majored in mathematics at OU, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, while also lettering in wrestling and performing in various musical productions. His academic journey didn’t stop there; he went on to earn an astounding 10 university degrees, including six master’s degrees and three doctorates, one of which was awarded by Oxford University.
For 25 years, Dr. Neal taught Mathematics at the University of Oklahoma, where he inspired over 10,000 students. His excellence in teaching was recognized with the Baldwin Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Most Inspiring Professor award. In his final years, he served as the Director of the OU Academy of Engineering, Science & Mathematics, continuing to educate and inspire both students and teachers in mathematics and technology.
Dr. Neal also founded the US National High School Mathematics Championships, held annually at the OMNIPLEX. He lived with his wife Araceli in the Oklahoma City, OK area until his passing. Dr. Richard Neal’s enduring impact on the field of mathematics and education remains a lasting tribute to his life’s work.
