From a lifelong Sandite to a standout defensive coach, Chris Thurmond’s journey is a testament to dedication and excellence in sports. With deep roots in Sand Springs and a career that spans major football programs and bowl games, Chris’s impact on the game and his community is truly remarkable.
Born on February 25, 1953, to Bill and Jo Thurmond, Chris Thurmond has deep Sand Springs roots, with both parents and grandparents being Sandites. Chris attended Sand Springs Schools throughout his academic career, graduating from Charles Page High School in 1971. Passionate about sports from a young age, he excelled in football and was a key member of the Sandite Golf Team.
Following graduation, Chris pursued a BS in Secondary Education History at Tulsa University. In July 1975, he married fellow Sandite Paula Newell, and together they have one daughter, Paige. During the 1980s, both Chris and Paula contributed to the Sand Springs educational community, with Chris notably serving as head coach of CPHS for the 1982-83 season.
Chris’s coaching career took him from CPHS to prestigious programs across the country, including Tulsa University, TCU, OU, the University of Alabama, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Houston, where he served as Defensive Back Coordinator. His coaching expertise has seen him participate in 15 bowl games. Currently, Chris continues his impactful career at Rice University as Defensive Backs Coordinator and shares his experience through motivational speaking, inspiring others with his coaching insights and achievements.
